Abstract
The image formation process of tourism destinations has been widely discussed in the academic sphere. However, since the historical-affective relations between countries have not been taken into consideration yet, the objective of this paper is precisely to bring this factor into the discussion. Based on literature review, it is suggested that
the consumers’ (tourist) mental image toward a location is determined by factors that precede their own perception. Thus, this theoretical paper intends to build up a reliable basis for gathering new insights on this matter. Results show that new study opportunities concerning the interpretation of tourist destinations may arise.
