Abstract

This article intents to indicate some of the major contributions of anthropology to studies of tourism, taking into account their contributions in the theoretical-epistemological, methodological and applied fields. The anthropology has been concerned with the tourism both in its understanding as a phenomenon of far-reaching consequences of the social world, as well as in the provision of a methodological tool, assisting in the enhancement of qualitative research in the fields of research and analysis, especially through ethnographies based on research participant and the comparative use of them. And within an applied perspective, anthropological studies have collaborated to implement policies and practices for sustainable tourism in order to minimize the negative impacts of activity on the host communities. Thus, whereas the paradigm of analysis and understanding of tourism is following based on assumptions of economics and marketing, anthropology of tourism has been proposed in recent decades as a qualitative approaches counterpoint, providing a holistic and integrated approach to other fields disciplinary.
