Abstract

This article analyses the social practices of tourism and its relationship with space, placing them in relation to the logic of production and consumption, including places. Based on a historical perspective, it seeks to establish a brief conceptual field on tourism, referenced in contributions from various areas of knowledge. Based on the dialectic between space and society, it presents the linkages between tourism and social practices (economic, political and cultural-ideological) to understand the various manifestations of the activity, emphasizing its economic, political and symbolic dimensions. The analysis of tourism social practices sustains the reflection on the production and consumption of space by and for tourism, identifying the specificities of “tourist space”. Finally, it presents a framework that synthesizes the fundamental aspects of the relationship between tourism and socio-spatial practices.
