Abstract

This article aims to assess the perception of fishing communities’ residents of the tourism impacts and to identify factors that influence these perceptions. To achieve these goals it was undertaken a survey, in 2011, to 157 residents of two fishing communities located in northern Portugal (Castelo do Neiva and Vila Praia de Âncora) and carried out various statistical analysis, including Principal Components Analysis, Correlations Analysis, t-test and ANOVA. The results obtained show that residents of Castelo do Neiva and Vila Praia de Âncora consider that tourism has more positive than negative impacts and consider that tourism contributes to local economic development, the strengthening of cultural identity and does not disturb the practice of fishing activities. The results presented also show that the residents’ perception of the impacts varies according to their levels of involvement in tourism and connection to the community, their degree of
interaction with visitors and according to their socio-demographic profile. The article ends with some contributions of the study for the fishing communities’ sustainable development.
