Abstract

Given the significant structural changes occurring in the tourism sector in recent decades, which resulted in an evident increase in competitive intensity, the chances of success of tourist destinations are conditioned, to a large extent, by the degree of efficiency in the use of its resources. This aspect, which should be taken into account when designing any competitive strategy, is particularly relevant in the case of one of the key elements of tourism in any destination, such as accommodation, in particular the hotel accommodation. The aim of this paper is to analyze, by means of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), the relative efficiency of Spanish provinces hotel supply of mid and high range (3 to 5 golden stars), using physical inputs and outputs and discriminating according to the category of the establishments. For this, we turn to the CCR and BCC models, both in its input orientation, allowing us to distinguish between the two types of technical efficiency (global) that may have the units analysed: pure technical (local) and of scale.
