Abstract

The objective of this paper is to present the neoliberal discourse of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) and to promote critical studies on the statements produced by such entity. Before being a neutral body that produces neutral statements on tourism, WTTC is a market agent that has clear interests in the production of confusion between the ideas of travel (inalienable human right to move the world free of constraints) and tourism (capitalist form of exploitation of these legitimate offsets). Such concerns should be brought to light at the time of production of the meanings of tourism. The object of analysis is the discourse of strategic priority ‘freedom to travel’ drawn up by the WTTC. The Critical Analysis of Discourses was the adopted methodology. This work seeks to make those who are engage with tourism to position themselves within this field of disputes which has the planet as a ‘game board’.
