Abstract

This article intends to demonstrate that the return of the ‘new generation’ of Portuguese emigrants can contribute to gender equality in the tourism sector in their places of origin, in Portugal. The results obtained by a study in Portugal, through the application of a survey to 5.157 Portuguese emigrants, corroborate this argument. It was concluded that the unequal distribution of household chores at the residence of the host country is desired by female emigrants, especially because they have higher availability and more skill/empathy by this type of tasks. Their installation at the residence built from scratch in Portugal and the largest dimension of its areas will contribute to assume the social place they wish at home and, consequently, in their job and in society in general. In their perspective, the residence’s tourism activity will also increase their income in workplace and lead to domestic work remuneration.
