Abstract

Social and economic changes led to several changes in the tourism sector, leading to a redesign of the mass tourism and placing tourists with the same socio-emographic characteristics, behavior or motivation in small groups, resulting in new segments and in the design of supply for more demanding audiences. This paper intends to present the development of the solo travel segment, trying to understand how it appeared and what is the current market position. The profile of this type of tourist is presented, considering its main characteristics and motivations, the elements of the supply and the destinations that they choose. Lastly, the topic of safety and security in the tourism industry is introduced in order to understand how this affects the solo traveller.
