Author Guidelines

The Journal of Tourism & Development accepts two types of papers:

  • Full Research Articles

  • Special Issue Articles (Special issues are commissioned periodically and full article submissions for these issues are invited in response to public calls for papers).

In order to standardise the submission procedures, the author(s) should follow the following guidelines:

  1. Full papers must be submitted in digital format (MS Word format), via the PROA platform. Authors should use the provided template . Additionally, information about the authors should be submitted, using the specific template for the purpose.
  2. The main document should be submitted along with the original files of tables and figures (unless they have been produced in MS Word), whether Excel documents or other programs (in this case, they should be saved in JPG, GIF or EPS).
  3. The file name should begin with the name of the author(s) (e.g., Davis & Lee). The same applies to tables and figures files, to which numbering should be added (e.g., Davis & LeeFigure1; Davis & LeeTable2).
  4. The texts must be original and can be presented in Portuguese (according to the rules of the new Orthographic Agreement), English or Spanish. If the author(s) first language is not English, a proofreading certificate may be requested.
  5. In the document with the information about the authors, the title of the article should be indicated, as well as each author’s personal information: name for publication, email address, academic degree and respective area, professional category and affiliation (e.g., PhD in Tourism from the University of Aveiro. Adjunct professor in the School of Technology and Management of the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu). The paper itself must not contain any mention of the authors' names or other information revealing its authorship.
  6. On the first page of the paper the title should be repeated, followed by the abstract (with a maximum of 1,500 characters without spaces) and keywords (up to 5), both in the original language and in English.
  7. The document must be typed on an A4 page, with 1.5 line spacing, the font should be Times New Roman, size 12.
  8. The pages should be configured with top, bottom, left and right margins at 2.5 cm.
  9. Full papers have between 5,000 and 8,000 words, excluding notes, tables, figures and list of references. The document should not exceed 10,000 words in total.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • The text is single-spaced, using 1,5 lines; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The manuscript should clearly state its theoretical contributions, highlight innovative and distinctive aspects compared to existing literature, and outline the study’s relevant societal impact, ensuring alignment with the journal’s editorial criteria.
