Abstract

The growth of cruise tourism, especially in the 70’s, represents today an important sector of world tourism.
Regions such as the Caribbean, Mediterranean and Alaska, are the most popular and also the most prepared to develop an increasingly innovative sector in the new concept of cruise ships. The aim of this paper is to contextualize the cruise market worldwide and in particular the prospects for the region of Macaronesia. References were used such as statistical data to official bodies of tourism in the region, plus a SWOT analysis on the potential development of the activity of cruise tourism in the Atlantic.
