Representation of Chinese 5G in Portugal
an analysis of the intertextuality in journalistic texts

The Chinese company Huawei has generated controversy as the importance of 5G technology has become evident in recent years. In May 2023, Portugal decided to exclude the company from the country's 5G infrastructure, due to its considered “high risk” to the security of national networks. From an intertextual perspective, this article examines how the journalists include and articulate various sources and how they position themselves in relation to external voices in the representation of Chinese 5G in Portugal, through the collection and analysis of related texts in the newspaper Público from 2019 to 2023. The results reveal Portugal's dilemma on this matter, accompanied by thematic evolution from opportunity, concern to risk/refusal in the context of geopolitical competition. Explanatory texts stand out among different forms of reporting, in which journalists distance themselves from external voices through well-attributed quotes.
