Abstract

The period that followed April 25th 1974 was a time of social, demographic and cultural changes for the country and they were reflected in almost all public institutions. Many of them, founded during Estado Novo to support the policies of the regime, were extinguished, and others have seen to change their mission and goals. However, it is not always possible to speak of a total shift, and so the operational mode of some institutions has remained. INATEL was one of these cases, and kept from its predecessor, FNAT, the type of initiatives carried out, keeping popular culture and working classes leisure at the core of the its activities.

The purpose of this communication is to show and analyze the popular music events organized by the institution in order to streamline local activities and facilitate meetings between groups. Through a mapping of INATEL's actions, identifying support programs, participants, timelines, and activity plans from 2008 to 2017, I intend to discuss the scope of popular music policies and the motivations behind this action plan.

The current research on the Fundação INATEL’s action in the popular culture, popular music policy, and leisure practices is part of a study that is being developed in the scope of the Phd Programm in Anthropology started at 2017.  This research was complemented by fieldwork, bibliographic research and interviews with some figures responsible for planning the activities presented.
