About the Journal

The Cadernos de PLE. Estudos Variacionistas e Aplicados em Língua Não Materna is an annual journal and appears in continuity with the Journal Cadernos de PLE published in printed format (available at: http://www.varialing.eu/?page_id=665).

Its editors decided to relaunch this publication, now in online format, aimed at a wider audience and theme. This new edition, which also has peer review, aims to encourage research in Portuguese as a Non-Native Language, from a strictly linguistic point of view, combining some perspectives of Linguistic Variation with Applied Linguistics, thus accepting the different theoretical and epistemological approaches of Modern Linguistics.

Cadernos de PLE. Estudos Variacionistas e Aplicados em Língua Não Materna it is an open access journal in which all content is available for free. Users are authorized to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search the full texts of the articles or use them for any other lawful purpose, without seeking prior permission from the publisher or the author. This is in line with the BOAI definition of open access (Budapest Open Access Initiative).

The journal is based on an open access publishing model and does not charge publication fees to authors, applying a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license to published articles. Authors retain the copyright of their articles.

The editors, after passing the proposals through the Turnitin plagiarism detector, will then send the texts to two members of the Scientific Committee, thus ensuring a double anonymous peer review. In addition, if they issue different opinions, the text will be sent to a third evaluator for tie-breaking.

The journal allows and encourages authors to publish articles submitted to the journal on their personal website and/or in institutional repositories.

 

Statement of Authors, Reviewers and Editors for the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence

For any use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools, for example ChatGPT, the editor/author/reviewer declares it, in the text itself, showing that the use of AI is carried out in a controlled way, as a support tool, and that it has not served to produce texts and original research results, perform data analysis, interpret or substitute primary or secondary sources. If AI was used, it worked as a one-off aid, but it did not determine the substance, orientation, or intellectual content of the text. Thus, the theoretical frameworks, the interpretations of bibliographic references, the case studies and the conclusions are the result of the independent research and critical judgment of the editor/author/reviewer. All cited works were consulted directly, and the references were selected and verified by each editor/author/reviewer. The editor/author/reviewer retains full responsibility for the form and content of the text signed.

History of the Journal:

The Department of Languages and Cultures of the University of Aveiro started, in 1979, the International Summer Course – Lusitanis in Diaspora – aimed exclusively at descendants of Portuguese emigrants living abroad. Later, these Intensive Summer courses, held annually in July, will have another structure and welcome a much wider audience, covering various levels of learning: initiation level, intermediate and higher level.
Before that, in October 1991, with the arrival of foreign students to the University of Aveiro, within the framework of the Erasmus programs and other European mobility programs, the need arose to put into operation, in addition to the existing Intensive Courses, Intensive Courses in the months of September and February. Almost simultaneously, the Semester Courses of Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PLE) were also created, aimed primarily at these same students, but which were quickly sought after by a diverse audience. The Courses undergo some restructuring to be able to accommodate all foreigners, UA students or not, who could start learning PLE and those who, having already started their learning, wished to deepen their knowledge in the areas of Portuguese Language and Culture. The growing interest in Portuguese as a Foreign Language meant that, in the same year, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Education, represented respectively by the Camões Institute and the Department of Basic Education, and the University of Lisbon agreed to recognise the creation of a PLE Assessment and Certification System, thus creating the Centre for the Assessment of Portuguese as a Foreign Language (CAPLE).
Since the creation of CAPLE in 1999, the Department of Languages of the University of Aveiro has become the Centre for the Assessment of Portuguese as a Foreign Language (CAPLE). The University of Aveiro thus becomes the first Centre for Examinations of Portuguese as a Foreign Language (centre 4002 – Aveiro), for the assessment and certification of the PLE, with a view to obtaining certificates and diplomas of PLE, issued at various levels of communicative competence (CIPLE, DEPLE, DIPLE, DAPLE, DUPLE), in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages,  with international recognition. It is in this context that the idea of creating the research project in the area of Portuguese as a Foreign Language, integrated in the Linguistic Variation research group, arises.
Lurdes de Castro Moutinho, responsible for these same courses, from their creation in 1991 until 2005, decided, with some elements of this research group, to promote fundamental research on the teaching of Portuguese to foreigners, with the main objective of contributing to a better training and updating of all PLE teachers, also aiming at a greater dignity of Portuguese in the world and of all those who have the difficult task of teaching it. Following this, the scientific journal Cadernos de PLE was created to bring together the research developed in this area. The research is developed using authentic materials, written and oral, proposing to cover the different levels of linguistic analysis – phonetic/phonological, lexical/morphological, syntactic, pragmatic, textual – with a view to identifying existing problems in the teaching/learning of PLE, as well as the awareness of the difficulties arising from it. This research gave rise to the periodic publication of three issues of the journal Cadernos de PLE that we consider to be an important scientific support for all PLE teachers, in Portugal and abroad. Its distribution to the different lectureships and chairs would be ensured by the Camões Institute. For various reasons, the publication was interrupted and, from 2021, Paulo Osório and Lurdes de Castro Moutinho relaunched this publication, entitled Cadernos de PLE. Estudos Variacionistas e Aplicados em Língua Não Materna. This publication, in online format, aims to constitute a contribution to the area of Portuguese as a Non-Mother Tongue, from a strictly linguistic point of view, combining some perspectives of Linguistic Variation with Applied Linguistics, Contrastive Linguistics, thus accepting the different theoretical and epistemological approaches of Modern Linguistics.
It is about opening a space for reflection on Portuguese as a Non-Native Language and creating an instrument that facilitates the task of all those who have the responsibility of teaching in this scientific area.
