The Spanish Civil War Eighty Years After: Another Glance – The Glance of the Other
The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) stands as one of the most horrifying and striking events of the twentieth-century. This fratricidal struggle, the clash of irreconcilable ideologies, the new warfare techniques utilized against the common people, the barbarity carried out by the participants in this strife, the long and cruel dictatorship which ensued, struck, forever, the imagination of the Spanish people as well as those in its surrounding neighboring countries, who, in one way or another, were pulled into this fight.
The theme of “The Spanish Civil War Eighty Years After: Another Glance – The Glance of the Other” aims at, on its 80th anniversary marking the beginning of this war, to explore, mostly, the view that foreigners had of such an event – especially the Portuguese --, who could not have remained indifferent to the atrocities of such a conflict which divided and galvanized these peoples, from the points of view of warfare, politics and humanitarianism, but which also inspired great works of art, especially in painting and literature.
