Abstract

In this paper I intend to introduce some aspects of the doctoral research that I have been developing at UNIRIO since 2013, regarding popular singing education in Brazil. The research I have already accomplished up to this stage shows that the demand for educational opportunities in the popular field has increased in the country and that there is a need to create and develop didactic strategies to support such new trends. This research aims to find the parameters within which the singing voice professional can address the market and also suggests that, through Pierre Bourdieu’s field theory (2003), we could come to a new understanding of that reality. I propose that there is a "field of voice teaching in Brazil" and, in addition to that, a "subfield in the teaching of popular singing" has been configured in the past 40 years. In this article I will also present one of the questionnaires to be sent to popular singing teachers, so that through them we can better attempt to understand the real conditions of their work. The goal of this research is to achieve maximum knowledge of what the teaching of popular singing is today and pinpoint its principal tendencies and problems.
