Abstract

The article is part of a proposal for the study of the presence of the action of the word in contemporary dance and focuses on Saladin Tears, a work by Rui Horta with Tiago Rodrigues, seen and heard as a speech and a research subject. Regardless of the meaning that the word on the scene calls into play, it is considered by its physicalnature, and is thought as a process with the ability to actthrough its sound and vocal value. Noticing the juxtaposition and the compatibility of the ideas of various authors, the experience of the word sound value and the perception of the word in a constant game of relationships on the scene are maintopics of discussion. Departing from the concrete sound dimension there is a possibility to connect word with the body and with contemporary dance. The process of giving word to the body that dances before the Other (the spectator) may be perceived as a way of giving a voice and empowering the dance and the theatrical and performative event. From the perspective of Saladin Tears – which offers great material to hearing awareness – the sound experience of the spoken word prevails over its linguistic sense letting us to consider, also, speak of dance as process of a perceptual experience of hearing nature.
