Author Guidelines

Content submission rules

The submission of articles, as well as all contacts arising from the review and publication process, is carried out exclusively online, through the journal platform of the University of Aveiro. The submission of articles is free, and there is no charge for the entire process, from submission to publication.

 

The submission must consist of a minimum of two files

1) Letter to the editor (maximum 1 A4 page)
It must contain a brief abstract about the article, indicate the title, authors, contact of the author with whom correspondence must be maintained and the number of figures and/or tables.

Authors must declare:
i) that the article is not a copy or translation of articles published or published for publication in another journal;
ii) that the co-authors are aware of the article's submission and that they authorize one of the authors to maintain a correspondence with the journal;
iii) in the case of international explorations, which complied with the ethical rules of the International Union of Speleology;
iv) in the case of scientific works, the authors must declare that they have obtained it as required for carrying out the work, namely in protected areas, with protected species or in archaeological contexts.

 

2) The manuscript

The manuscript must be sent in Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, or RTF document file format, Arial 12, with 1.5 line spacing and paragraphs identified by tabulation. Sections should be highlighted in 'bold'. Manuscripts could be written in Portuguese, English or Spanish, and the authors are responsible for linguistic correction and language adequacy. All manuscripts go through a peer review process. Editors suggest changes to the texts and also refuse their publication based on the lack of quality and quality of a manuscript. Italicized term formatting should be used in the case of foreign names, or names that follow specific naming rules. Units of measurement must follow the rules of the international system.

 

 

STRUCTURE OF ARTICLES

All articles must include: title of the article in bold, name of the authors, affiliations of the authors, address, e-mail of the author for correspondence, abstract (maximum 200 words) and keywords (maximum seven). Abstract and keywords must be considered in Portuguese and English.

Whenever possible, the structure of the articles should include the following sections: Introduction, Material and Methods, Results, Discussion, Final Considerations, Acknowledgments and References.

 

TABLES AND FIGURES

Tables and figures must be cited in the text (Fig. 1; Figs. 2-3; Table 1) and numbered in the order in which they appear throughout the text. The table caption is placed at the top and the figure caption is placed at the bottom. Figures must be submitted in a separate file with a minimum resolution of 200 dpi.

 

TOPOGRAPHIES

Topographies (cave maps) are figures and authors must take into account the fact that they are reproduced in A4 format. All topographies must include orientation, achievement data and cavity entrance locations, it is also convenient to indicate the degree of accuracy defined by the British Cave Research Association. Topographies must follow the international symbols presented by the International Union of Speleology.

 

 

REFERENCES

All publications cited in the text must be classified in the Bibliographic References section. Careful verification must be carried out to avoid errors and/or omissions related to the authors' names and/or publication dates, either in the citations throughout the text or in the reference list.

Citations throughout the text must be requested in chronological order and in alphabetical order in the case of publications with the same date. The list of references must be presented in alphabetical order of the first author's last name and, for publications by the same author, in chronological order; publications by the same author and the same year should be mentioned using distinctive letters eg: (Pupo, 1986a,b).

To refer publications in the text, the name of the author(s) (without initial) must be indicated, followed by the date of publication,

i) works by a single author: Pupo (1986) or (Pupo, 1986)

ii) works with two authors: Soares & Carvalho (1989) or (Soares & Carvalho, 1989)

iii) works with three or more authors: Neves et al. (2007) or (Neves et al., 2007)

 

Bibliographical references at the end of the article must be alphabetically ordered and have the following styles:

i) Periodic publications:
Reboleira A.S.P.S., Borges P., Gonçalves F., Serrano A.R.M. & Oromí P. (2011). The subterranean fauna of a biodiversity hotspot region - Portugal: an overview and its conservation. International Journal of Speleology, 40(1): 23-37.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • Text is 1.5 line spacing; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
