The analysis of its use in conditional clauses introduced by se/si shows how the system of verb tenses/modes is organized according to similar, but not identical, criteria in both languages. The differences verified in this work by the Contrastive Analysis constitute the area of difficulty in SFS learning for Portuguese speakers, and these difficulties are evidenced not only by the transfer of the future subjunctive through calcs or hybrid/creative forms, but also by a restructuring of verb tenses/modes of this syntactic context in the students’ interlanguage, as can be seen in the studies referred to in this work. Therefore, it is intended, on the one hand, to establish theoretical lines that support the linguistic analysis of this syntactic context and, on the other hand, to underline the need to deepen the empirical research on how learning happens and what are the specific difficulties that Lusophone SFS learners manifest in their academic path.
Joan Rodríguez Sapiña ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-02-21 2024-02-21 11 15 33 10.34624/rual.v0i11.35731 Perceptions about the first wave of the COVID‑19 pandemic in Portugal and Spain. An approach to the available lexicon of Portuguese university students https://proa.ua.pt/index.php/rual/article/view/35734
Since it broke, the new coronavirus has completely transformed our lives. Languages have not been immune to the effects of the pandemic either, as they are living and dynamic components of societies (Cioccio, 2020). Thus, the term COVID 19, which until recently was non existent in Spanish and other languages, has become ubiquitous and has given rise to new words directly related to this pandemic (Pons, 2020; Rodríguez Ponga, 2020).
Therefore, considering the undeniable influence of the disease in our current daily discourse, in this article we offer the results of an investigation through which we inquired about the impact of the word prompts “COVID 19 and Spain” and “COVID 19 and Portugal” in the updated lexicon of a group of university students who have Portuguese as their mother tongue and are also SFL students (N=30). With this, we aim to find out, from the lexical selection, what their perception of the incidence and management of the first wave of the pandemic in both countries are. To obtain the data, we applied psycholinguistic tests of lexical availability, following the methodology proposed in the Pan Hispanic Project of Lexical Availability.
Mirta Fernández dos Santos ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-02-21 2024-02-21 11 35 59 10.34624/rual.v0i11.35734 Contrastive analysis of compound expressions in Portuguese and French annotated corpora https://proa.ua.pt/index.php/rual/article/view/35740
Adjectives are attributive modifiers, and they integrate the Noun Phrase as adjuncts of a nominal head N, sharing with it, in Romance, inflectional features. Some compounding models, however, allow an NP with two adjacent nouns N1N2, in which seems to be an apparent modifying relation. Departing from previous proposals (Noailly 1990, Villalva 2003, Dressler 2006), our analysis implies that endocentric N1N2 sequences in Portuguese and French are in fact modified structures, where N2 is close to an “attributive noun” (Martinho 2007, 2013). Indeed, if a random sequence like * “voiture âge” would be clearly unacceptable, attested expressions like “uma criança modelo” or “une voiture bélier” seem, on the contrary, quite clear about the modifying nature of “modelo” and “bélier” respectively, however raising questions about the category, morphology, syntax and semantics of such a modifier. In these “binominal modified constructions”, frequently classified as lexical or morphosyntactic compounds, we will consider, based on a contrastive study of the concordances extracted from the CETEM and FrWAC corpora, that N2 appears to share in both Portuguese and French the syntax and morphology of the adjectival category. Moreover, since N2 meets allegorical properties but lacks extensional ones (Carnap, 1947), we conclude that, in this kind of stereotypical modification relation, shared by all Romance languages (Fabre 1996), N2 modifiers in fact revert to intensional adjectives with relational or quantified interpretation.
Fernando Martinho ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-02-22 2024-02-22 11 61 86 10.34624/rual.v0i11.35740 The attribution of nominal gender in oral productions of late learners of Portuguese as a non-native language https://proa.ua.pt/index.php/rual/article/view/35746
Based on the analysis of gender assignment and nominal gender agreement deviations in oral productions, the present study aims to assess patterns of acquisition of the grammatical gender category in Portuguese as a non native language (PNNL) by late learners, native speakers of Spanish and English, attending classes at levels A2, B1 and B2. More specifically, we aim to investigate whether the configuration of prior linguistic knowledge affects learners’ performance with respect to the association of nominal gender values in Portuguese. The empirical work showed that a greater typological proximity of the languages, mother tongue and learning target language, does not translate into a reduced number of deviations, since, in proportional terms, the deviation rates in the two segments are very close, especially at the most advanced level. Finally, the oral productions of the Spanish informants also reveal a certain stabilization effect in learning, since at level B2 the proportion of deviations is not considerably lower than that recorded at the previous levels, A2 and B1.
Tãnia Santos Ferreira ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-02-22 2024-02-22 11 87 105 10.34624/rual.v0i11.35746 Interlanguage analysis of discourse markers used by english‑speaking learners of Spanish as a foreign language https://proa.ua.pt/index.php/rual/article/view/35800
This article shows an interlanguage contrastive study that compares the use of cohesion resources between English speakers learning Spanish as a Foreign Language (SFL) at different proficiency levels, and a control group of Spanish speakers, extracted from the corpus in Spanish CEDEL2 (Lozano, 2009). The analysis focused on two macro‑functions: to expose and to argue.|It was carried out in English as mother tongue, SFL, and Spanish as mother tongue, to compare the productions between them. For each language group and proficiency level, the count of connectors was framed by a template carried out by Mizón and Oyanedel (1999). The frequency of use and the percentage relationship between words per language group and connectors used were calculated. This allowed us to observe that in both mother tongues the use of discursive markers is lower than in SFL and that the performance in the native languages shows a preference for other resources for the control of textualization: pronominal and verbal ellipses, lexical substitutions, anaphoric co‑reference or a good control of the punctuation, among other resources that we observed.
Gloria Toledo Vega Francisco Quilodrán Peredo Edson Pizarro Velásquez ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-02-25 2024-02-25 11 107 126 10.34624/rual.v0i11.35800 The risks and actions in the Covid‑19 pandemic: a contrastive analysis of the Portuguese and Chinese news under a frame analysis https://proa.ua.pt/index.php/rual/article/view/35803
This article explores, from a contrasting perspective, the Risk and Action frames in Portuguese and Chinese news relating to Covid‑19 pandemic. For this, it was built an interface between Media Framing and Frame Semantics in order to observe the two frames from a macro and a micro level, represented in the related news of the largest news agency in Portugal and China – Lusa and Xinhua. Two corpora were created in the software AntConc which gathers the selected news from the two agencies in the period of the isolation of Wuhan (January 27 – April 8, 2020). The research results point to the fact that the two frames were used in both, however, the risks and actions represented differ.
Si Chen ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-02-25 2024-02-25 11 127 143 10.34624/rual.v0i11.35803 Perceptions of Portuguese learners of Spanish about pronunciation and pronunciation learning https://proa.ua.pt/index.php/rual/article/view/35806
Pronunciation is an essential element in the development of the student’s communicative competence. It is essential for the teacher of Spanish as a foreign language to know which instruments are the most appropriate for teaching pronunciation. In this sense, it is important to be aware of the factors that influence the learning of pronunciation. The aim of this paper is to find out the beliefs of Portuguese learners of Spanish as a foreign language about pronunciation and its learning in a Portuguese public university. Data collection was carried out through the application of a closed questionnaire adapted from the Fonoele project. In general, the results showed that, despite a certain interest in the study of phonetics, the learning of phonetics remains in the background and is repetitive and not very interactive. The conclusions drawn from the analysis of the data showed that the aim of our work was achieved, allowing us to make a general diagnosis of the learners’ beliefs. We hope that this work will serve to create effective activities and develop more extensive research in the future.
María Luisa Aznar Juan ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-02-25 2024-02-25 11 145 164 10.34624/rual.v0i11.35806 The analysis of hedges in medical scientific articles – a contrastive German-Portuguese study https://proa.ua.pt/index.php/rual/article/view/35809
Hedges have been in the focus of research in Languages for Special Purposes (LSP) over the last decades, being an integral part of scientific discourse. In the present article, we address the contrastive analysis of hedges in German and Portuguese scientific articles in the medical field. The aim of this study is to contribute to a systematisation of the categories of hedges, which still constitute a research gap in this language pair. Based on the categorisation of hedges proposed by Salager‑Meyer (1994, 1995) for medical articles in the English language, we present a framework, which was used to identify and extract the occurrences of hedges in both corpora. The contrastive study was carried out using comparable corpora of twenty scientific articles belonging to each of the respective languages. The corpora analysis was carried out with AntConc version 4.1.1 (Anthony, 2022), by means of which the most representative hedges were identified in the selected texts, according to the previously established categories: (1) Hedges, (2) Approximators, (3) Expressions of doubt, and (4) Compound hedges. For each of these categories, hedges were contrasted in both languages in order to draw conclusions about the use of attenuation in medical articles. The category of compound hedges proved particularly interesting for future studies, given its complexity and difficult delimitation.
Katrin Herget Teresa Alegre ##submission.copyrightStatement## 2024-02-25 2024-02-25 11 165 191 10.34624/rual.v0i11.35809 Andrei Platônov (2021), Tchevengur https://proa.ua.pt/index.php/rual/article/view/35812
Sem resumo disponível.
Adelto Gonçalves ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-02-26 2024-02-26 11 195 200 10.34624/rual.v0i11.35812 Maria Estela Guedes, Conversas com Federico García Lorca https://proa.ua.pt/index.php/rual/article/view/35815
Sem resumo disponível.
Adelto Gonçalves ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-02-26 2024-02-26 11 202 205 10.34624/rual.v0i11.35815 Edmar Monteiro Filho (2012), O acorde insensível de Deus https://proa.ua.pt/index.php/rual/article/view/35824
Sem resumo disponível.
Adelto Gonçalves ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-02-26 2024-02-26 11 207 210 10.34624/rual.v0i11.35824 Silas Corrêa Leite (2021), A Coisa: muito além do coração selvagem da vida https://proa.ua.pt/index.php/rual/article/view/35827
Sem resumo disponível.
Adelto Gonçalves ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-02-26 2024-02-26 11 211 214 10.34624/rual.v0i11.35827 Adelto Gonçalves (2021), Bocage, o perfil perdido https://proa.ua.pt/index.php/rual/article/view/35830
Sem resumo disponível.
Ademir Demarchi ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-02-26 2024-02-26 11 215 218 10.34624/rual.v0i11.35830 Whisner Fraga (2022), Usufruto de demônios https://proa.ua.pt/index.php/rual/article/view/35833
Sem resumo disponível.
Adelto Gonçalves ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-02-26 2024-02-26 11 219 221 10.34624/rual.v0i11.35833 Réplica Itinerante, Ana M.
