Submission and publication guidelines

1. Conditions for Submission

Each volume of this journal will feature an annual special topic. It aims at publishing original scholarship – in either Portuguese, English, French, German or Spanish (see Submission and publication guidelines) – firstly subject to a double blind peer review process by appointed members of the Scientific Committee/Peer Review Panel, composed by researchers and instructors affiliated with the University of Aveiro and by other Portuguese or foreign institutions of higher learning and research centers.

As part of the submission process, authors are required to verify the compliance of the submission for all items listed below. Submissions that are not compliant will be returned to the authors.

The articles (originally unpublished) may, if their authors so wish, appear in other journals or books, provided they include the complete bibliographic reference of their previous publication in RUA-L.

This journal does not have article processing (APCs) nor submission charges.

2. Publication standards

The RUA-L follows the APA (American Psychological Association) bibliographic reference model.

However, attention should be paid to the following aspects:

2.1. Formatting

The texts must be presented in digital format (Word for Windows, or compatible program), in font Times New Roman, size 12 (with the exception of notes, size 10), with 1.5 spacing between lines and paragraphs. The pages should be configured in A4 format, with 3 cm in the upper and left margins and 2 cm in the lower and right margins.

2.1.1. Extension

Each article, configured in the above format, should have a maximum of 17 pages.

2.1.2. Organization

The presentation of each article (see volumes already published online and on paper) should follow the following sequence:

- Title - centered
- Author(s) - focused
- Educational Institution and/or Research Centre to which the author(s) is (are) attached - in footnote, linked to the name of the author(s)
- Keywords - up to 6 words, left justified, in the article language, in Portuguese and in English, right after the author(s) name(s)
- Abstract - maximum of 200 words, in Portuguese and English, at the end of the article
- Bibliographical references - only of works, articles and other works referenced in the text

2.2. Criteria for graphical presentation and bibliographic reference (in alphabetical order)

Bibliographic references

a) In the text: in parentheses, include the author’s surname/last name, followed by a comma, date of publication, followed by a comma and the page number.
Examples: (Santos, 2007, p. 15); (Martins / Polónio, 1985, p. 35); (Ribeiro et al., 1973, pp. 25-30)

- In case of a sequence of the same reference, should be used only ibid., followed by the number of the page(s). Example: (ibid., p. 350).

- When the author’s name is mentioned right before the bibliographic citation, simply indicate the dates and page numbers in parentheses.
Example: …as noted by António Santos (2007, p. 15).

- If the material was quoted elsewhere (indirect quote), precede it by apud. Example: apud Melo, 2002, p. 55.

- In case of a paraphrase, precede it by cf. Example: (cf. Ramalheira, 2000, p. 505).

b) Bibliographic references should be listed in alphabetical order at the end of the text (in the "Bibliographical references"). In the case of several works by the same author, in alphabetical order of their respective works, with an indication of the city, publisher and pages (these in the case of articles).

Examples (monographs, collections, anthologies, journals, dictionaries, online texts):

Lanham / Maryland: The Scarecrow Press, pp. 69-76.

d) When there are two or more references of the same author and the same year, add to the date the letters a, b, etc. The date of the first work by the same author must be followed by the letter a.

e) The dates of the first edition, if relevant, may be indicated. Include these indications at the end of the respective reference, in square brackets. Example: [2nd ed., 1999].

Ellipses: highlight ellipses by way of using square brackets […]. When an original text that was quoted includes an ellipsis, use three dots inside square brackets […]. Foreground any omissions using three dots inside square brackets.

Titles of books are italicized and titles of articles are in quotation marks. The use of quotation marks depends on the language in which the paper has been written (see Quotes above). Titles of books included in the title of an article should be italicized.

Translations: in the translation of the quotations, insert a line between the quotation and the respective translation. When the translation of the quotation is incorporated into the text. When the translation of the quotation is incorporated into the text, it should be placed after the original in square brackets, without using quotation marks again (see above Quotations).
