The movie Burning (2018), by South Korean director Lee Chang‑Dong, adapts the short‑story «Barn Burning», included in the anthology The Elephant Vanishes (1993), by Haruki Murakami. In this article, I examine Chang‑Dong’s adaptation strategies, regarding four categories: characters, plot, space and time. In this way, I wish to contribute to a reflection upon the dialectics between the literary and the audiovisual language, the proximity and the contrast between both, the challenges of adaptation and the power of creativity.
