Portuguese for the Republic: republicans and anarchists combating in Spain (1934 / 1936-1939)

Portuguese and Spanish historiography have centered the studies on the Civil War in the collaboration provided by the Portuguese regime to the rebels led by Francisco Franco. Nevertheless, it is necessary to point out the presence of Portuguese in defense of the Spanish Republic and its ideals. Republicans and anarchists exiled in Spain, from 1931, will always lend their unconditional support to the Republic. In 1934, when the rise of the Spanish Confederation of Autonomous Rights and the government of Lerroux threatened republican freedoms, the Portuguese collaborated in the Asturian Revolt. In 1936, they will be the first foreigners to appear to the popular battalions to fight the Francoist forces in the headquarters of the Montana. From this date until the end of the war, they fought alongside the Spanish, integrating their regular combat forces, reaching positions of importance in the army and the General Staff. In this context, the Lusitania Plan is one more piece in the collaboration of the Portuguese for the Spanish combat against the pro-Franco advance. This article intends to offer a panel of relations and cooperation established between the Portuguese exiles and the Spanish Republic between 1931 and 1939.
