Against the “lies of Madrid”: Portugal and radio broadcasts during the Spanish Civil War

During the Spanish Civil War, at the service of Salazar’s political strategy and propaganda, Portuguese radio stations became the best loudspeakers of the Franco regime. The two main radio stations in Portugal at that time, the Radio Club Português and the official Emissora Nacional, disseminated systematically messages that sought to discredit the Government of Madrid and praise the virtues of Franco and his army. At the time that the Salazarist propaganda apparatus encouraged hearing favourable stations to the military rebels Spanish, it tried to prevent the Portuguese listeners from tunning radios that denounced the maneuvers of the Iberian fascism against the second Spanish Republic. This article is based on documentary sources and historical periodicals to attempt to analyze qualitatively the most relevant aspects of this object of study with the objective of uncovering some of the keys to this phenomenon media in a panoramic and symbolic way.
