A tragic event of universal impact such as the Spanish Civil War could hardly fail to impress and stimulate the writers of a neighboring and brother country as is the case of Portugal.
Miguel Torga, who trekked through Northern Spain as the war proceeded a little further South, bequeathed to his readers, in 1939, the vigorous portrait of a land brutally pacified but still stained with the blood of innocent victims. His courage would throw him into prison, arrested by the Portuguese dictatorship police.
In an emotionally, more detached register, Manuel de Seabra, too, a Portuguese writer based in Catalonia, would revisit in novels published in 1959 and 1982, this bloody conflict that divided and left the Spanish people in mourning.
