The present article discusses the strategies of development and positioning of a tourist destination based on the tourism of sporting events. The argument is supported by a discussion of results based on a case study - X African Games - which took place in Maputo City, capital of Mozambique in the year 2011. The research is descriptive-qualitative in nature, using the techniques of bibliographical, documentary and data collection research based on the standardized interview technique and direct nonparticipant observation, which concludes that in CM the tourism segment of sports events is a strategic impeller of development of a tourist destination. The positioning is not yet visible, since this destination is still in the phase of exploration (1st phase) of the tourist destination’s life cycle.
