Abstract

Going further than the three traditional dimensions of sustainable development, the 17 SDGs
(Sustainable Develop Goals) are very useful for tourism development. The importance of authenticity
in the consumption of experiences and the role of museums as places of interpretation and fruition of
a destination's culture, have been widely debated in tourism literature. The authors sought to discuss
these concepts through a literature review focused on the role that museums play in achieving the SDG
11 of sustainable development. An attempt was therefore made to develop a starting point for an exploratory
investigation into the role museums play in the enjoyment of authentic experiences between
local communities, their history and tourists.
