This article seeks to identify, from a bibliometric methodology, how the discussion of competitiveness of tourist destinations and its measure has evolved in the Brazilian and international publications in the last twenty years (1996-2016). At the national level, ten indexed journals were used to carry out the survey, and the Scopus database was elected to make the international study. It also makes a reflection on the positive and negative points of some aspects of the literature produced, such as the frequency of the publications, concepts e methodologies used under this subject. The bibliometric methodology applied made possible to understand the advances and setbacks in the concept of competitiveness applied to tourism as well as provide the study with informative graphics about the amount of production per theme, year, author, journals and country of publication. From this study, we can infer that national researchers are still highly dependent on international literature. When it comes down to create new knowledge, Brazilian studies are often a review of what has already been published. Regarding the amount of publications, Brazil falls behind many countries and its number can be considered very low.
