This paper aims to contribute to a reflection between the growth of tourism in the historic center in specific tourism contexts (eg Porto) and the gentrification phenomenon that has taken the city streets by storm. Thus, it will be analyzed throughout this manuscript, what is the best way to understand the antagonism to the development of tourism, assessing the perspectives of residents. Specifically, we intend to present a literature review that goes in the direction of proposing a model where the community feels an integral part of the tourism project rather than a feeling of exclusion in relation to this activity. It should also be mentioned that this model of sustainable development assumes that tourism can act as a transformative tool and as a rescue agent of the local tradition, rather than as a mechanism of social exclusion and gentrification. Future work should contribute to propose (and test) new models that better preserve the socio-cultural sustainability in tourism (considering the impacts of different types). From an interdisciplinary perspective, this study contributes to the tourism literature, sustainable development and management of tourist destinations.
