How Pandemics and Disease Outbreaks Impact the Tourism Industry: an industry perspective on challenges and opportunities

Abstract

The global pandemic was a disaster for humankind, but it was also a source of opportunities and challenges for society. There is a large body of research about the impacts of pandemics and disease outbreaks in tourism, especially in the consumer perspective, but less attention was paid to the perspectives of tourism players, especially the challenges and opportunities brought about by the pandemic. Using a panel of experts, a survey was applied. Economic impacts were the most impactful during COVID-19, in particular the unemployment. Lack of liquidity was identified as one of the most financial highlights. Concerning operation and technological impacts, the majority pointed out a “a race for technology”.
