Route of modern architecture in Tomar: Development of a virtual guide

Abstract

The tourism industry, once regarded in several nations, as a prime mover of economic development, faces a severe global crisis, due to covid-19 pandemic and subsequent restrictions on travelling between countries. The diversification of cultural tourism supply, using new approaches, can encourage national tourists to (re)visit the places of their cultural memory, and thus contribute to drive national tourism industry. This article presents an application for mobile devices (app), the virtual guide RAM Tomar 1930-1965, addressed for cultural tourism sector. The app was developed by a multidisciplinary team of Polytechnic Institute of Tomar, with the purpose to disseminate modernist architectural heritage in the city, designed between 1930 and 1965.
