Circuito Turístico Terê-Fri: Identifying problems and opportunities for governance processes and local development

Abstract

More collaborative and participatory planning approaches are more likely to provide opportunities for sustainable development goals to be properly considered and evaluated in the appropriate situations and processes. This paper presents the results of an extension and pedagogical project that aimed to develop with local tourism planners, developers and community of Teresópolis-RJ, Brazil, participatory processes for collecting and discussing data, dialogue, cooperation, planning and tourism management, focusing on efforts to develop more inclusive initiatives that are led by local communities and promote local heritage and culture. As a result, it can be argued that strengthening the governance and local network was a legacy left by the initiative. More efforts should be made to foster initiatives that are effectively led by local communities and thus result in more benefits.
