Abstract

[It is estimated that 80% of global tourist flows are directed to fragile ecosystems in coastal areas, contributing to chaotic territorial occupation and promoting considerable speculation and socio-environmental issues. Having understood that coastal areas are extremely fragile environments, very susceptible to transformations, the complexity in managing these areas is centred in structuring integrated plans for the potential activities sectors. Impact on coastal communities is enhanced with sea level rise and coastal erosion increase. Knowing this, it is intended to introduce the transformations caused by the process of coastal erosion occurred on the Ponta Negra Beach-Natal/RN/Brazil shoreline. In its dynamics and expansion, beach tourism has imposed a spatial and functional reorganisation. In 2000, the beach had 3km of urbanized waterfront. Over the years, sea advancement decreased the sand strip and from 2010 onwards, high tides were cause for concern: in January 2012, a full moon tide swash occurred, damaging the boardwalk. The process dragged on with no solution, reaching the intervention of judicial courts. Without concrete actions, in 2013 emergency work begins (riprap) to minimize impacts caused by erosion, while pleas are made for an effective solution that is harmonized with local characteristics].
