an Imagological Approach

In the context of globalization in which we live and communicate, translation becomes a means of exchanging and disseminating national and ethnic identity between different countries and regions. In literary translation, efforts and contributions are made by the translator to reconstruct a certain national or ethnic image, taking into account its reception in the context of arrival. Imagology therefore provides a new perspective for literary translation studies.
In this case, based on an imagological approach, this paper takes as its object of study the Brazilian Portuguese translation of Yu Hua’s novel Viver (活着), focusing on the reconstruction of the Chinese image, i.e. the reflection of Chinese society and population in the work, in order to address the translator’s treatment of the translated image. We hope to reveal the relationship between translation and image reconstruction, in order to open up new visions for the translation and promotion of Chinese literature abroad.
