Translation from Chinese to Portuguese of Sentences with Null Subjects

Abstract

This study analyzes the translation of phrases with null subjects from Chinese to Portuguese, highlighting the structural differences between the languages. The research is based on a comparative analysis between Chinese and Portuguese, focusing on the classification and reference mechanism of the null subject in both languages. Using cases from the Report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China as examples, the work aims to study the translation procedures employed, taking into account the specific characteristics of Chinese governmental reports and the syntactic properties of the two languages. The analysis reveals that the implementation of structures in the target language is intrinsically linked to the coreference mechanism of the null subject in both languages. After a detailed and careful analysis, it is concluded that the most effective translation procedure include the use of independent clauses with null subjects, subjective infinitive clauses (non-finite), gerundive constructions, the use of the imperative mode, and the adoption of the passive voice.
