Mobility and signaling management in satellite networks for 3th generation mobile communications

Abstract

The integration of satellites in 3rd generation mobile systems is fundamental to guarantee the objective of universal coverage, especially in remote and underdeveloped areas, where the exploration of terrestrial infrastructures is economically unviable. To overcome the limitations associated with the usage of geo-stationary satellites in these systems (i.e. high delays in signal propagation and impossibility of covering high latitudes), it is necessary to use constellations of satellites with lower altitude and non geo-stationary orbits.
