Abstract

Between January and March 1915 Alexandre Rey Colaço and Júlio Cardona performed the complete set of Beethoven’s Sonatas for piano and violin in Grémio Literário, in Lisbon.

From Laurence Bardin's (2011) content analysis methodology, this paper examines the criticisms of these concerts in order to understand their reception by the press, contributing to a better technical and artistic characterization of these performers.

There are many references to the educational value of the performances, to the repertoire and to the participation of students. Allusions to Beethoven's genius and his historical importance are frequent.

The press highlights Colaço and Cardona’s technical and artistic prestige. Their interpretations were qualified as masterful, bright and sensitive.
