This research is part of a chapter of the author's master’s dissertation and aims to discuss musical silence, using as a research object Appalachian Spring (1945) by composer Aaron Copland (1900-1990). The first topic contains general definitions about silence, its physical structure and its use as communication material; in the second topic, it brings specific definitions and their specific functions to music; in the third topic, presents three articulating functions of silence for the musical discourse, which are the preparatory, transition and interruption functions; finally brings the conclusion of the research. The main theoretical basis was based on works by Koelrreutter (1990), Vilela (2016) and especially Ramos (1997).
