Through an anthropological approach to performance, this article presents research about the Chamarritas’ balls, an Azorean folk practice that was recently the object of revitalization. This article primarily focuses on the art of calling, by analyzing the process of improvisation, and secondly on the presence of theatricality, by looking at how the various types of performers relate to each other.
