To study opera and music-theatrical genres in the Portuguese context of the last decades, particularly with regard to stage production strategies, involves defining an artistic geography that unites more than 50 creators from very different fields. This reveals not only the diversity of this context, but also a growing motivation for music-theatrical genres that has been observed all over the country in recent decades. By focusing on a specific group of creators coming from a Portuguese dance background, I intend, on the one hand, to deepen the knowledge about opera and music-theatrical staging in Portugal and, on the other, to describe the participation of Portuguese dancers in the intended context, restoring the path of some creators who collaborated in lyrical seasons of Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, from 1940 to the present. I additionally aim to analyse the intervention of the “New Portuguese Dance” in music-theatrical productions over the past 20 years.
