Abstract

The present article presents the state of the art of research in progress that investigates the role of self-regulated practice behaviours in the flow experience, a holistic sensation of intense engagement in musical practice. The preliminary results have suggested that the psychological state of flow, in the area of musical performance, is a multifaceted experience, with cognitive, behavioral, affective, and physiological characteristics that can exert positive influences in the development of distinct musical activities. Although participants in this research have reported experiencing flow during individual musical practice processes, some of its dimensions were significantly less reported. The article concludes with a discussion of the implications of the findings and suggestions for future research.
