"Productive friction" is an alternative to ease-of-use in Human-Centred Design, which is valued for enhancing experience and rationalising workflows, but is often linked to superficial interactions and diminished thought. The study draws from interaction design, game studies and speculative design to formulate a conceptual framework for reintroducing challenges, disruptions and unpredictability as stimuli for thinking and creativity. Engineering friction in the digital environment may consciously be engineered to stimulate cognitive processing and participation (Jones, 2019). The practical outcomes of applications, ranging from adaptive e-learning platforms and design-based educational tools to game mechanics and interactive installations, have been found to enrich experiential outcomes and renew the discourse between them and the media. The study combines psychology insights, research into teaching methods, and real-time adaptive algorithms to counter the risks of standardisation and radicalisation that uniform design may pose.
