Population dynamics in Viseu Dão Lafões with mobile positioning data

Abstract

This study investigates population dynamics and tourist mobility patterns in the Viseu Dão Lafões region using mobile positioning data (MPD). The data were analyzed in conjunction with official statistics and tourism-related variables, aiming to provide a more detailed and up-to-date view of the region. The methodology involved a hybrid approach to data collection, including extraction and transformation of information from multiple sources, followed by Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD) application. The results revealed a positive correlation between population density estimates derived from mobile positioning data and Census data, validating the utility of this data as a complementary tool for demographic and tourism analyses. Additionally, patterns of movement among foreign tourists in the region were identified, offering relevant insights for event planning and local tourism promotion. However, limitations related to data availability and complexity are acknowledged, highlighting the importance of careful interpretation of results. In conclusion, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of population dynamics and tourism in Viseu Dão Lafões, emphasizing the need for ongoing analysis and methodological.

    Master's degree in Data Science for Social Sciences from the University of Aveiro, Portugal, and Bachelor's degree in Sociology from the Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil. With over 12 years of experience in opinion, socioeconomic, and political research. Advanced proficiency in both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Proficient in data analysis languages such as Power BI, Python, SQL, and QGIS.

  • João José Lourenço Marques, University of Aveiro

    João Lourenço Marques is an associate professor with aggregation at the Department of Social, Political, and Territorial Sciences at the University of Aveiro, teaching in the areas of Urban Regional Planning and Public Policies (within the domains of decision-making methods and techniques). He holds a Ph.D. in Social Sciences from the University of Aveiro (European Doctorate). He completed his Master's degree in Innovation and Regional Development Policies and his Bachelor's degree in Regional and Urban Planning at the same university. He was a visiting researcher at the universities of St. Andrews, Dundee, and Heriot-Watt (Edinburgh).

    Currently, he is an integrated member of the Research Unit on Governance, Competitiveness, and Public Policies (GOVCOPP: https://www.ua.pt/govcopp), coordinating the Decision Support Systems Group - GOVCOPP. In the Territorial Studies and Innovation Group (GETINUA: https://www.ua.pt/getinua/), he has participated in and coordinated several research projects and service provision in the areas of strategic territorial planning, decision support systems, territorial competitiveness, demographic dynamics and forecasts, econometric models, and economic models of regional development.

    His current research interests focus on the development of tools and methodologies to support decision-making in the public and private sectors. The application of these approaches and tools covers various thematic domains (housing, demography, mobility, general interest services, infrastructure, employment, etc.) and territorial scales (from local to national scale).
