Abstract

The path to inclusion is an unfinished process, in constant change and reconfiguration. Portugal has a legal framework based on an integrated and continuous approach to the school career of students in schools that respond to the needs of each and every student, promoting their inclusion for educational success.

This article is not intended to be an exhaustive literature review, but rather to offer an overview of the concept of inclusion, its implementation in Portugal, seeking to articulate different national and foreign contributions. Taking into account the aforementioned problem, this critical-reflective analysis will seek to provide answers to two guiding questions about inclusive education in portuguese schools: (i) what is the reality of inclusive education in the portuguese context? and (ii) what challenges are there to promote inclusive education in the portuguese context? Aiming to develop a critical-reflective reflection on the two issues presented, this article intends to (i) outline a theoretical-conceptual framework of inclusion in education in Portugal, (ii) present a portrait of inclusive education in Portugal and (iii) present the challenges posed to the promotion of inclusion in the educational field resulting from the latest investigations in the area.

As a result of the analysis carried out, relevant factors are identified in the promotion of inclusive education in Portugal, including (i) training and recruitment of teachers, (ii) active collaboration in the educational community, (iii) dynamization of new resources associated with the opening of new spaces for inclusion and (iv) management and monitoring of inclusive education.
