Abstract

This article addresses social representations as structuring elements of the thinking and behaviour of societies, links from the past and the memory of individuals to contemporaneity, which enable an interpretation of the world through simplification and categorization. Going through Durkheim and Moscovici to Kalampalikis, we approach theories that relate representations to a human need to idealize the world and explain it through myths, religions and ideologies, considering that social representations are considered the myths of contemporaneity that arise in an attempt to explain what is unknown and different to us. In this way, and considering that in contemporary times globalization and migratory movements make societies – and schools in particular – increasingly complex in their composition, we developed a narrative-type literature review with the following objectives: i) identify the most current study topics in the area of social representations in educational contexts; ii) identify the methodology used; and iii) understand the contributions of these studies to the development of the area. To this end, a search was carried out in a database, Scopus, and 14 articles from the last two years were found. The articles were subjected to a categorical analysis and the results demonstrate that: i) most of the studies focus on social representations associated with health issues, with a focus on emerging themes of nowadays societies, such as COVID-19 and climate change; ii) and the most used data collection instruments are the interview survey and the questionnaire.
