Public educational materials as an educational tool for sustainability in the Brazilian semiarid region

Abstract

Globally the UN has outlined the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in 2015 that provide goals and targets to be met in various dimensions of sustainable development. Publications related to DS issues in Brazil, the Ministry of the Environment (MMA) and the Ministry of Education (MEC), present great potential for the formation of conscientious citizens, in a school environment, and serve as subsidies for the implementation of several Actions. Some Brazilian regions, due to their environmental problems, require urgency in the implementation of SD programs, as is the case in the semi-arid region. The objective of this study was to evaluate MEC and MMA publications on SD in the light of the Sustainable Development Objectives and to classify their possible use in semiarid schools. For this, a spreadsheet with general questions about DS and specific questions about the semi-arid was constructed. There were 12 publications evaluated and most of them are in line with the various SDG. When evaluated whether these publications can serve as a basis for strategies for coexistence with the region cited, the response for most publications was “in parts”. It is suggested, then, that the construction of official publications regionalized.
