The main goal of this study was to assess the Biology and Geology Portuguese teachers’ conceptions about the importance of practical activities (PA) in the teaching of the curricular unit “Sustainable management of resources” of the 8th grade, included in the curriculum of the discipline of Natural Sciences. Fifty-eight Biology and Geology professors, teaching in public schools, participated in this study. The instrument used was the inquiry questionnaire. The results revealed that participants’ conceptions of the importance of PA were not correlated with gender, length of service or initial training. Participants of the older age groups put a high value on the PA planning. The conceptions about the importance of the PA were significantly related to the strategies adopted, the frequency of the implementation of PA in the teaching of this curricular unit and the continuous training. Participants who considered PA important in the teaching of Geosciences presented a great satisfaction with their implementation.
