So as to identify e-learning practices at the Institute of Education (IE) of the University of Minho (UM) an exploratory study was undertake that involved all the teachers effectively working in the 2009/2010 academic year. To that effect a questionnaire was conceived – “Education practices, perceptions and needs of IE teachers as to Distance Education and e-learning” – that, after a process of form and content validation, was electronically sent to all IE teachers. In the present text we present the constituting dimensions of the instrument conceived for collecting data, we characterize the sample and present part of the data collected that made it possible to characterize the practices of use of the platform Blackboard by IE teachers, as well as the reasons that lead them to implement (or not) practices of e-learning in their teaching activity. Finally, some reflexions and reformulations are put forth so as to understand the reasons presented by the teachers for the use/non use of the platform Blackboard and the possibility of incrementing those same practices.
