The increasing expansion of urban areas, the high production of waste, among other factors associated with the lack of environmental awareness has contributed to significant changes and growth impacts on the urban ecosystem. The present study aimed to know the resident community and how it relates to cognitive and emotionally with this ecosystem unit: Meia Ponte River, at its extent in the region north of the city of Goiânia, GO, Brazil. The investigation of perception of school about the impact of some activities on conservation of the environment where they live to draw a socio-environmental diagnosis as subsidy to local actions and projects to be implemented in the region. The study consisted of on-the-spot visits with photographic records in the region and application of semi-structured interviews with residents (n = 102) and school (n = 100). It is obvious that environmental impacts and damage suffered by residents has its origins in the great level of urbanization on the banks of the river and the antropic actions that occur over the years by the occupation of the soil and urban sprawl. The community has good understanding of the impact of human activities on the environment, however, this perception has not been enough to lead to proper management of local resources, showing the necessity of executing strategies of environmental education by the population and environmental public policies that monitor environmental impacts.
