The creation of distance learning courses has brought new challenges to an institution organized for classroom teaching, having to start a way to adapt to this new reality without losing the quality of its courses. The Distance Learning Unit of the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (IPLeiria) created in 2008 an e-tutors course to prepare future teachers with skills to plan and teach distance learning courses. These 6 years of experience in distance education allowed IPLeiria to solidify practices and procedures at a pedagogical, organizational and technological level. With 5 degrees and 3 master’s degrees offered as distance learning programs, the IPLeiria has formed about a third of its teachers enabling them to work in this context.
