Context: The family caregiver is a key element in the care of the dependent person at home, ensuring the necessary continuity. This activity is exhausting and challenges constants, resulting in an increased burden on different levels. Nursing interventions aimed at meeting the needs expressed by the caregiver during the care and eventually decrease the levels of burden experienced by this performance of their duties.
Objective: To determine the impact of nursing programs in overload felt by family caregivers of people with addiction.
Methodology: The following research question was formulated according to the PICO strategy: "Does family caregivers, target nursing interventions, have lower rates of overhead?"
Results: We obtained a literature review, two randomized controlled trials, four systematic reviews of the literature and a guide to good practice.
Conclusions: Interventions which allow a break in the psychoeducational care or are decreasing further the burden for family caregivers. However, this decrease is more significant compiling a mix of both, if they are contextualized and meet the needs of the caregiver.
