Abstract

Augmented reality promotes the interaction of the physical world with the digital world through the actions of the interlocutor, which is why it can promote active learning. This article is part of the IFITIC Project ‘Innovating with ICT in Initial Teacher Training to promote methodological renewal in Pre-school Education and in the 1st and 2nd Cycles of Basic Education’ and involved students on teaching master’s programmes. Its general aim is to understand the contributions of incorporating augmented reality resources in the context of active methodologies in the 1st Cycle of Basic Education (CEB), focusing on the pedagogical design of the tool’s integration and its impact on participation, motivation and results (knowledge and skills), by analysing four reflective narratives by trainee teachers. This is a study carried out in one 1st grade class and two 3rd grade classes from two school groups in the district of Porto. Qualitative methodology was used, specifically content analysis of the reflective narratives. It was found that integrating the tool into educational practice challenged the trainee teachers in the technical and pedagogical fields, increased the children’s participation in the construction of their learning, their motivation and attention, as well as fostering the development of digital literacy skills and other competences for training tomorrow’s citizens.
